Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the sources, causes, modes of transmission of an infectious disease outbreak that occurred as a result of meal consumption in Ulsan Metropolitan City Police Station Cafeteria to prevent future recurrences for such infections.
Methods: An epidemiological investigation was conducted on 100 police officers, public health center staff, and cooks who ate food. Food intake was analyzed in a case-control study of 7 confirmed patients and 14 control subjects. Stool samples were collected from symptomatic subjects and analyzed for bacteria and viruses. Preserved food and environmental samples including water were tested.
Results: The result confirmed that the attack rate of clinically suspected cases was 37% (37/100), and C. jejuni were isolated from 7 of clinically suspected cases. Boiled chicken soup was a significant risk factor for the occurrence of Campylobacter jejuni Infection outbreak (OR, 22.00; 95% CI, 1.86-260.66).
Conclusions: In the process of preparing raw chickens for group feeding, attention should be paid to cross-contamination and incomplete cooking.
